Make a splash in Lyme Regis for local and national charities

MAKE a splash in Lyme Regis and help raise money for local and national charities.

Swimmers lines up for the Lyme Splash 2016

The second Lyme Splash open water sea swim will take place on Sunday 10 September, when participants will attempt to swim 3.15km or 1.7 nautical miles from Lyme Regis to Charmouth.

Swimmers will be waved off by Lyme Regis mayor, Cllr Michaela Ellis.
Registration is now open and there are 150 spaces up for grabs, increased from 100 spaces last year.

Lyme Splash chairman Karen Durham-Diggins is hoping to repeat the success of the inaugural event in 2016.

She said: “We had a fantastic feedback last year, from the swimmers, our safety team and volunteers who took part - they all really enjoyed the challenge. We learnt a lot and have fine-tuned the event to make it even better this year.”

The event raised £900 last year through swimmers’ sponsorship, raffle and entry frees, which was split equally between three charities – Lyme Regis youth music group B Sharp, Lyme’s Marine Theatre and Water Aid.

The same three charities will be the beneficiaries of this year’s event and organisers hope to raise even more this year, with each swimmer being asked to donate or raise sponsorship money for the selected charities.

Registration is £30, which includes entry to the swim, a T-shirt and swim hat.
Swimmers must be competent in the sea and have swum at least a mile in open water to enter.

Karen said: “We’ve already had a lot of interest from last year’s entrants, as well as people who have since heard about the event.

“There has also been a great response from our local sponsors and raffle prize givers. On completing the swim our swimmers will receive a delicious cup of 70% origin hot chocolate from Dorset chocolatiers Chococo, and biscuits from Moores Biscuits before being whizzed back to Lyme Regis by Lyme Rib Rides.

“Sponsorship from Lyme Bay Holidays has also really helped support the behind scenes infrastructure. There will be prizes too from Chococo at the presentation celebration at the Marine Theatre after the swim.

“River Cottage, Ammonite Fine Foods, The Pilot Boat, Herbie’s Dino Bar, Lyme Rib Rides, Moores Biscuits and the Marine Aquarium have all stepped forward again and provided some great raffle prizes and there will be more to come.
