Lyme Regis - The Cobb

Sport in and around Lyme Regis

Despite being dominated by the sea, Lyme Regis still retains many of the usual sporting facilities you would expect from a town of 4,000 residents.

Football

Football can be found at the Davey Fort, home of Lyme Regis AFC, known as the Seasiders. The Charter Standard club is one of the oldest in the region and is due to celebrate its 125th Anniversary in 2010.

Currently there are three men’s teams participating on Saturdays in the three-county Perry Street and District League. In addition, there is a ladies' team and five youth teams from under 9s upwards. Spectators and new players are always more than welcome at the ground which can be found half-way up Charmouth Road overlooking Lyme Bay. The Davey Fort Clubhouse is available for hire throughout the year. For further details contact the Club Secretary on 07814 114973.

Golf

The Golf Club, founded in 1893, boasts one of England’s most picturesque seaside courses which is on Timber Hill to the North of the town on the road to Charmouth. Thursday is Ladies' Day and the course is closed until 13:00 or 15:00 depending on the season. Sunday is Men's Competition Day and the course is normally closed until noon. Otherwise visitors may play after 09:30 unless there is a special event taking place.

For the more leisurely golfer there is a newly laid 18-hole mini/crazy golf course in Langmoor Gardens directly above the main Lyme beach. Adjacent to the mini-golf course there are also two outdoor table-tennis tables. Balls, bats and clubs can be hired from the council hut on site.

Bowling

At the west of the main sea-front parade is the Lyme Regis Bowling Club with its immaculate Charles Mercer Green. Visitors are welcome to use the facilities. The club can be contacted on 01297 445443.

Cricket

Uplyme and Lyme Regis Cricket Club play on the King George V Playing Field in Uplyme, between April and September. The club has two teams which play in the Devon League on Saturdays. It is also hoped that a series of friendly matches will take place on Sunday afternoons. For further details telephone the clubhouse on 01297 442985 or the club secretary on 01297 443050. The playing field is by the Uplyme Village Hall, on the main road towards Axminster.

Croquet

The King George V Playing Field in Uplyme is also home to the Lym Valley Croquet Club. Members meet on Mondays and Thursdays at 14:00, and new players or those interested in taking up the sport are always welcome. For more details telephone 01297 443212. The playing field is by the Uplyme Village Hall, on the main road towards Axminster.

Tennis

There is an all-weather tennis court available for hire alongside the King George V Playing Field in Uplyme. The court can be booked between 09:00 and 17:00, through the Uplyme post-office on 01297 442138. The tennis courts are by the Uplyme Village Hall, on the main road towards Axminster.

Indoor sports

For the indoor sportsman most of the public houses in the town offer pool and darts, and some also have skittle alleys.
