Local celebrity missing from Fossil Festival
This year's fascinating and highly successful Fossil Festival was missing a celebrated local this year.
The reason?- Feisty local fossil collector Mary Anning passed away some 150 years ago; but not before making an invaluable contribution to the new science of palaeontology (that's studying fossils to you and me!). In doing so she helped put Lyme Regis firmly on the map.
Back then Lyme Regis hotels would be thronged by some of the most celebrated scientists of the day (even a German prince put in an appearance). Everyone was eager to visit her little shop and make use of her expertise.
Mary was wedded to her work and never married. Her headstone still stands in Lyme's picturesque churchyard overlooking the fossil-rich cliffs she spent her life exploring. So as you return home with a bucketful of fossils reclaimed from the beach please give a thought for our Mary, the first and best fossil collector of all.
