The Lyme Lympics 2012
A few weeks ago a strange event took place on the sands of Lyme Regis; strange, because it is not often that you see a crowd of people of all ages having a bit of good, old fashioned fun in the sun.
The event was the Lyme Limpics, Lyme Regis' answer to those other events in London. With no multi-million pound sponsorship a small band of enthusiasts commandeered the beach for a series of fun and games that included a mermaid race, an eight legged race and partner jousting. The Gods smiled on us and what had been a dreary old day broke into late afternoon sunshine right on cue.
Proceedings began with the arrival of a very special guest HRM the Queen accompanied by Prince Phillip (well as close as we could get for 50p) who was chauffeured in an open-top car accompanied by outriders and trumpeters. She and her consort kindly stayed for the whole proceedings handing out medals to the winners (chocolate... a bit more edible than gold). It was such a memorable time that it will definitely become an annual event in Lymes summer calendar.
