Half-Term Break by Vivienne Graham

Bridge Street,

From the 1st of March until the 26th of May, Lyme Regis Museum will be playing host to a solo exhibition by local textile artist and painter Vivienne Graham.
Entitled Ten Views of Golden Cap, this enchanting showcase consists of different images in textile of Dorset’s best-known coastal cliff—the tallest in Southern England. Each work will be accompanied by a written description explaining how that image was conceived and developed.
Vivienne calls her hand-stitched textile paintings “embroidery-collages” as she uses various materials like cloth, embroidery silks and beads to create them. “I learned basic sewing and embroidery at primary school during the 1950s,” Vivienne explains. “Girls started needlework at seven while boys did woodwork. We learned hem-stitch, chain-stitch, blanket-stitch and cross-stitch - the same stitches I use today.”
“In 2010,” she continues, “while clearing out my mother’s attic, I rediscovered a hessian beach bag with a collage of girls playing beach ball that I had made as a child, and after retiring to the west country, I got the urge to sew another beach scene like it, and the result - my ‘Jurassic Belle’ textile - will be included in the exhibition.”
Thus a fortuitous rediscovery has led to Vivienne’s current series of textile works that Museum visitors will be able to enjoy!
